- Paper or card stock 8.5 x 11 (we will cut these in half- copier paper is good for practice pop ups)
- Small sharp scissors and/or
- Exacto knife and cutting mat
- Metal ruler (optional)
- Bone folder
- Glue stick for collage element
Let’s start with the Baby Block #19
The easiest of all the pop up structures uses just two parallel cuts. I have marked up this card with some details to remember. Always be aware of the fold! We are cutting from that side. The dotted line is a reminder that your cuts can not go past the center line. Why? Because if you cut beyond the line, when you fold up your card, your pop up will extend past your fore edge and won’t fit in an envelope or will create a fragile overhang in your book. This structure makes a basis block- but think about how you might use that as an attachment point for a cut out or a collaged element.
Two parallel cuts inside the center line Fold over and press to a crisp fold Fold under and use that bone folder to smooth that creased fold The page opened and ready for pop ups. Valley folds fold down, the front of the block is a mountain fold and comes forward. The finished Baby Block
Using the block to offset a collaged element
Keep your cuts shallow and fold back and forth. Pop up into the card and glue in your collaged image. This is a great way to embellish cards. If you use number 4 it can create a vase or pot that you can glue flowers into and have a pop up bouquet.
Mayan Temple
The Mayan Temple takes advantage of the folds created by the Baby blocks. Any place you create a fold, you can create a next level pop up. You are limited by the strength of your paper and the sharpness of your blade. Some folds will create pop up blocks- but in some places, you will need to reverse the folds and create dark pockets. Here is a very simple temple pattern- I used scissors to cut through all the layers, so they are a little wonky. Accuracy and clean cuts make for more professional looking cards.
STAR BOOK format
We probably won’t have time to create pop ups and a book in our afternoon session- so we will talk about binding our cards on another day. But if you want to think about creating 5 or 6 cards- we can put together a star book which shows off pop up as a sculptural form.
