An upcoming workshop at the Grand Marais Art Colony will feature three stab bound or ledger style books in a binder.
Chiyogami paper reflects the patterns found on stenciled or brocade kimono fabrics.
The signatures or gatherings of pages are quite different than western codex style books. The folded edges are sewn through as the binding. Because Sumi or rice paper is very thin – when you print or write on it, the image bleeds through to the other side. So each piece of paper is only one sided and the messy reverse side is folded to the inside.
Three different bindings-
Paper and cover stock
The paper is lightweight copier stock (20lb paper) and double sided origami paper for covers. Dimensions are 4.25 x 5.5 inches.
Vintage Japanese Binder- in rather sad shape. Uses the traditional bone and loop closures. The cover is a beautiful silk brocade fabric and lined with thick washi paper on 6 surfaces. The inspiration for my little binder. The label is on the top left corner- I wish I knew what it said so I would know what book or books it originally contained.
Good information. Lucky me I came across your blog by accident (stumbleupon). I have saved it for later!
Thank you!
